Last night we went to see The Walworth Farce at the Project Theatre. It was a great show with amazing acting. The entire time I was watching I kept wondering what was going to happen next. The play focused on the father of two sons who has them re-enact the events that caused the father’s departure from Ireland. As the shows goes on we learn that the events shown is not the real story. The show was a great mixture between serious and scary drama and tragedy right next to a great comedic scene. It was generally well liked by the group and a fantastic show.
We also had our last class with Dennis today, as well. He gave us the rundown of Samuel Beckett and Brian Friel and their different approach to Irish drama. Beckett’s plays do the exact opposite of what we had seen in Synge or even O’Casey. We spent most of the class talking about Beckett but we did cover Friel and his play Dancing at Lughnasa. The main focus was on the stage placement and the set. It was a return to the normal aspects we had talked about previously. We also discussed the starting positions of the characters, and how they related to the characters themselves.
